Silent, microchip-sized "fan" has no moving parts, yet produces enough wind to cool a laptop. Engineers harnessing the same physical property that drives silent household air purifiers have created a miniaturized device that is now ready for testing as a silent, ultra-thin, low-power and low maintenance cooling system for laptop computers and other electronic devices. The compact, solid-state fan, developed with support from NSF's Small Business Innovation Research program, is the most powerful and energy efficient fan of its size. It produces three times the flow rate of a typical small mechanical fan and is one-fourth the size. Dan Schlitz and Vishal Singhal of Thorrn Micro Technologies, Inc., of Marietta, Ga. will present their RSD5 solid-state fan at the 24th Annual Semiconductor Thermal Measurement, Modeling and Management Symposium (Semi-Therm) in San Jose, Calif., on March 17, 2008. The device is the culmination of six years of research that began while the researchers were NSF-supported graduate students at Purdue University. "The RSD5 is one of the most significant advancements in electronics cooling since heat pipes. It could change the cooling paradigm for mobile electronics," said Singhal. |

ASUS has announced a new soundcard, the Xonar DX PCI Express 7.1. The company claims the card produces audio 35 times cleaner than that of motherboard chips, with a 116dB signal-to-noise ratio in front output. As it name implies, the card is also capable of 7.1 surround sound, though only through Dolby codecs such as Digital Live and Pro Logic 8x. The DX is further compatible with the latest version of Microsoft's DirectSound, used in DirectX 10, and EAX 5.0, the latest effects simulation devised by Creative. Average frequency response is rated between 10Hz and 48KHz, and the card has a maximum quality output of 192KHz at 24 bits. Pricing and release dates are currently unclear, though the card should begin shipping in the near future. Source: Guru3D

ASUS announced the new release of 3,200 sets of limited-edition Triton 79 AMAzing CPU coolers. The name AMAzing represents achievements of this flagship cooler in terms of performance, stylish outlook and packaging. Made just for this limited-edition package, every component is protected by Polyurethane foam plastic; and each owner of the ASUS Triton 79 AMAzing will have an exclusive identification card marked with a limited-edition serial number. The Triton 79 AMAzing is able to support Intel Core 2 Extreme / Core 2 Quad Quad-Core CPUs (LGA775) and AMD Athlon 64 FX/X2 Dual-Core processors (939/940/AM2/AM2+/1207+). The Triton 79 AMAzing incorporates a nickel-plating copper base, 4 copper heat pipes and aluminum fins. Additionally, the cooler incorporates a PWM function 12cm fan that automatically modulates fan speeds according to the CPU temperature and delivers quiet cooling at 18dBA. The voltage regulation shield inside the cooler directs airflow created by the 12cm LED fan to surrounding VRM (voltage regulation modules) that are critical to processor operations and overall system reliability. This design effectively reduces VRM temperatures by 10-15°C for smooth and stable operations. The original assembly with specially designed push pins and clips make fastening the cooler even easier than ever before. The Triton 79 AMAzing can also be easily installed in 2 steps without removing the motherboard from the system.

Based on the new Intel Core microarchitecture, the processors use Intel's Hafnium-based high-k metal gate (Hi-k) formula for the hundreds of millions of transistors inside these processors. The Intel Core 2 Extreme is also manufactured on the company's 45-nanometer (nm) manufacturing process, further boosting performance and lowering power consumption. Combining these two advancements with new processor features enables faster and more energy-efficient processors that are better for the environment. The technology improves performance on games like Half Life 2 Lost Coast and Quake 4 and gives gamers the extra power they need to play tomorrow's multithreaded games. The 45nm Hi-K Silicon metal gate technology represents a leap in technology with more transistors in a smaller space and a larger L2 cache for increased energy efficiency. |
